Supporting teenage parents in Enfield
Crafty Business Enfield is a six-week programme, providing business startup and craft workshops for young parents living in Enfield. The project is supported by Enfield Council’s Resident Priority Fund and is designed to help raise the aspirations of young and teenage parents.
Like many London boroughs, Enfield has pockets of social deprivation and one in three families are living in poverty. Research has shown that teenage parents are more likely to suffer post-natal depression and remain unemployed than non-teenage parents. Crafty Business provides a relaxed, social setting for young parents to connect, get creative and learn about business. There is also a creche available for the young children, providing added benefits to their babies and children.
The crafts industry contributes £3 billion to the UK economy and the benefits of craft activities on health and wellbeing makes Crafts and Business the perfect combination for young parents.
Creative Training Hub has been providing business management training to the arts sector since 2013. The company has a strong connection with the arts and creative industry. Building links with the community is now at the top of Creative Training Hub’s agenda. Company Director, Kemi Bamidele, has a passion for creating social change. ‘We want to raise the ambitions of young parents and empower them to become entrepreneurs’ says Kemi.
The first of the six-week session was on 14 September and with 12 young mothers already registered the project has got off to a promising start. Week One started with a fun and interactive ice-breaker, followed by a ‘vision board’ activity. It was all hands on deck as the participants made beautiful tiaras during the one-hour crafty session.
Crafty Business Enfield will run every Monday from 14 September to 19 October 2015 from 12.00 – 2.15pm, at St Georges Community Hall, Freezywater, Enfield. For more information on Crafty Business or to book a place at one of the next sessions, please visit: https://craftybusiness.eventbrite.co.uk
